This scenic 8-9 hour journey follows the winding roads along the Bhagirathi River, passing through Uttarkashi and Harsil, two picturesque towns known for their stunning mountain views and apple orchards.

As we ascend, the air grows crisp, and the landscape transforms into dense pine forests and towering peaks. Upon reaching Gangotri, we visit the Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, and soak in the spiritual aura of this revered pilgrimage site. The evening is free to explore the surroundings and acclimatize to the altitude before we begin our trek to Kedartal the next day.

day 2
Acclimatization Day at Gangotri

On the second day of our Kedartal Trek, we take a well-deserved break to acclimatize to the high altitude before beginning our trek. Gangotri, at 3,415 meters, provides the perfect setting to adjust while exploring its spiritual and scenic landmarks.

We start the day with a visit to the Gangotri Temple, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, where we can witness the morning aarti and seek blessings for a safe trek. Next, we head to Suryakund, a spectacular waterfall where the Bhagirathi River cascades through rocky gorges, creating a mesmerizing sight.

For those looking for a deeper spiritual experience, we can explore the ashrams and caves of sadhus, who have renounced worldly life to meditate in the Himalayas. The rest of the day is spent relaxing, hydrating, and preparing for the exciting journey ahead.

day 3
Trek from Gangotri (3,415 m) to Bhoj Kharak (3,780 m) | 9 km, 5-6 hrs

The Kedartal Trek begins in earnest today as we set out on a challenging 9 km trek from Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak. After an early breakfast at 8 AM, we cross the Bhagirathi River and enter a dense forest of bhojpatra (Himalayan birch) trees, which lend the campsite its name.

The trail is steep and demanding, requiring careful footing as we navigate rocky terrain and exposed ridges. Along the way, we are rewarded with stunning views of Thalay Sagar (6,904 m) and other snow-capped peaks. The presence of gushing streams ensures access to fresh drinking water throughout the route.

After about 5-6 hours of trekking, we reach Bhoj Kharak, a narrow campsite perched on a ridge. A hot meal and a well-deserved rest await us as we settle in for the night, surrounded by the raw beauty of the Greater Himalayas.

day 4
Trek from Bhoj Kharak (3,780 m) to Kedar Kharak (4,270 m) | 4.5 km, 3-4 hrs

Today’s trek is short but steep, covering 4.5 km from Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak in about 3 to 4 hours. The trail continues through rugged terrain, with patches of alpine meadows emerging as we gain altitude. As we ascend, the bhojpatra forests begin to thin out, making way for grassy slopes and moraine fields.

Throughout the trek, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of towering Himalayan peaks, including Thalay Sagar (6,904 m)Bhrigupanth (6,772 m), and the vast expanse of the Gangotri National Park. The crisp mountain air and serene surroundings make this stretch of the Kedartal Trek truly mesmerizing.

Upon reaching Kedar Kharak, we set up camp in a stunning alpine meadow, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glacial streams. The rest of the day is free to explore the area, soak in the views, or simply relax before settling in for the night under the starry Himalayan sky.

day 5
Trek from Kedar Kharak (4,270 m) to Kedartal (4,750 m) & Return | 9 km, 7-8 hrs

Today is the most anticipated day of the Kedartal Trek, as we make our way to the emerald glacial lake of Kedartal, nestled at 4,750 meters beneath the towering Thalay Sagar (6,904 m) and Bhrigupanth (6,772 m) peaks.

The 4.5 km ascent is challenging, taking around 4 to 5 hours, as we navigate steep inclines, loose scree, and moraine terrain. The trail requires careful footing, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of the mighty Gangotri Range and the raw beauty of the high-altitude wilderness.

Upon reaching Kedartal, we are greeted by the stunning glacial lake, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding peaks. Considered sacred, this lake is a hidden gem of the Uttarakhand Himalayas. With a packed lunch, we take time to soak in the serene atmosphere, capture photographs, and appreciate the untouched beauty of this alpine wonder.

After spending some peaceful moments at Kedartal, we retrace our steps back to Kedar Kharak, carefully descending the same route. The return trek takes around 3 hours, and we settle back into our campsite for the night, cherishing the memories of this unforgettable day.

day 6
Trek from Kedar Kharak to Gangotri (9 km, 5-6 hrs) & Drive to Harsil (25 km, 1 hr)

After a hearty breakfast, we begin our return journey from Kedar Kharak to Gangotri, covering 9 km in approximately 5 to 6 hours. The descent is easier, but requires careful footing over rocky and uneven terrain. As we make our way down, we once again get to admire the majestic Himalayan peaks, deep valleys, and dense forests that have been our companions throughout the Kedartal Trek.

Upon reaching Gangotri, we take a moment to visit the Gangotri Temple and soak in the spiritual energy of this sacred town. After lunch, we embark on a scenic 1-hour drive to Harsil, a picturesque village nestled along the Bhagirathi River, surrounded by apple orchards and towering deodar trees.

Harsil, often called the mini Switzerland of India, offers a peaceful retreat after the challenging trek. Trekkers can spend the evening relaxing, enjoying the crisp mountain air, or strolling along the riverbank, reminiscing about the incredible journey before settling in for the night stay at Harsil.

day 7
Drive from Harsil to Rishikesh/Haridwar (290 km, 8-9 hrs)

The final day of the Kedartal Trek begins with a relaxing morning tea in the serene surroundings of Harsil, soaking in the fresh mountain air and breathtaking views of the Bhagirathi valley. After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive back to Rishikesh or Haridwar, covering approximately 290 km in 8-9 hours.

The journey winds through picturesque landscapes, dense forests, and alongside the glistening Bhagirathi River, offering a final chance to admire the natural beauty of the Himalayas. Along the way, we pass through charming mountain towns, making brief stops for refreshments and to stretch our legs.

With an estimated arrival time between 6 to 7 PM, trekkers will have ample time to reflect on the incredible experiences, breathtaking vistas, and challenging yet rewarding trails of the past week. This marks the end of the Kedartal adventure, leaving trekkers with unforgettable memories and a deep connection to the wilderness of Uttarakhand.
