Overview

Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is one of the most important pilgrimages for Hindu devotees. The Yatra consists of four main pilgrimage sites, namely Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Traditionally in northern India, the Yatra commences from the west and ends in the east. Thus, the Char Dham Yatra begins from Yamunotri, then proceeds to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath, and finally concludes at Badrinath.

Yamunotri is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. It is believed that a bath in the waters of Yamuna protects the devotee from untimely death.

Gangotri is dedicated to the goddess Ganga. This beautiful pilgrimage overlooks the river Bhagirathi, another name for the river Ganga. The name is derived from an ancient king, Bhagirath, who performed penance that succeeded in bringing Ganga from the heavens to earth for the salvation of his ancestors.

Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and part of the Panch Kedar. The holy river Mandakini originates from a lake near the Kedarnath temple.

Badrinath is situated on the banks of the river Alaknanda and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here while his consort Lakshmi took the form of a berry (Badri) tree to offer him shade.
